Symptoms of Anxiety

Treatment
Written by Kathy Moran
Treatment options for General Anxiety Disorder vary depending on how sever the symptoms are and what symptoms the person is experiencing. Anxiety is a part of all of our lives. Some days it’s more prevalent than other days. It shows when we are facing a tough exam, or a serious meeting with the boss, getting a divorce or losing a loved one to cancer. But anxiety can escalate and turn into a debilitating disease called General Anxiety Disorder or GAD.

That happens to thousands of people a year in the United States alone. When severe anxiety becomes a permanent resident in our everyday life, it becomes a constant, unreasonable worry that won’t go away. When this happens then it’s time to seek medical help to find a solution.

What are some treatments for GAD?

There are several possibilities. All would depend on the severity and type of symptoms the patient has. Medical doctors, after diagnosing General Anxiety Disorder, will probably recommend one of several anti-anxiety medications and/or some thought and behavioral therapy.

Regular medications would include a choice of many different types of mood altering drugs. Some examples would be Zoloft, Valium, Paxil, etc. If the doctor thought therapy would help they would probably send the patient to a behavioral specialist. This would entail work to get the patient to change his or her thinking patterns, work on relaxation techniques, and changing any repetitive behavior that has started.

Natural Options

There are also several helpful remedies among the natural herb and mineral, or health food solutions. Consulting with a naturopathic doctor would be a necessary step if you wanted to go in this direction. Any of the herbal/vitamin remedies for stress could be recommended. There are some specific combinations for anxiety such as ZenQuility, as one example.

These combinations work at getting the correct nutrients back into the body to stabilize and balance what the body is lacking. This is something the naturopath would want to test for in the patient. The relaxation techniques could range from any one of several types of meditation to erasure techniques to visualizations and affirmations or anything in between.

There again, all treatment will depend on the severity and particulars of the problem. Anxiety that has gotten to the point of being classified as General Anxiety Disorder is not something one can get over by oneself. It most likely will require some sort of medical help. It may take some time to ease the stress and anxiety even with some type of medication.

General Information

If the patient gets help and greatly improves it is necessary to stay vigilant as the problem could strike again whenever great stress is repeated in their life. GAD is very serious when it is a severe case. It can be absolutely debilitating, to the point of the anxiety causing a patient to live a completely non-functioning life. The patient can be so affected that simply preparing food is too much for them and paying bills, etc will be out of the question completely.

There are many degrees of anxiety disorder ranging from the non-functioning all inclusive kind spoken of above to a slightly over-anxious, overwhelming feeling involving a specific area or event in life. For those that have the slight to moderate feelings of anxiety, there are even some self help suggestions out there.

The self help ideas include things like establishing a worry time. This is a process where you set a specific time on a specific day to worry about anything that’s bothering you and then block those worries at all other times.

There are many other suggestions for the self help person as well. Hopefully if you, or someone you know, have obvious signs of anxiety you will take the time to find one of the above remedies to help alleviate the problem. Whether the condition borders on severe or is simply annoying, there is help available by several different ways and means.

Summary

Anxiety is a normal part of life for everyone. When anxiety starts to interfere with your standard of living or you stop doing things because the activity makes you anxious, then it might be time to seek professional help.

There are medical treatments, naturopathic options and a plethora of self-help books and suggestions on how to treat anxiety. Many times the anxiety symptoms can be dealt with by a change of diet, decreasing caffeine intake and making sure you get enough sleep at night. If this doesn’t work, it is important to see your doctor.
